Five injured, three ejected in early morning crash

web posted December 5, 2009
MERRIWETHER – Five people were injured in a violent single car crash Saturday morning on Currytown Road. Three of the passengers, a woman and two small children were ejected as the Honda Accord flipped at least six times before coming to rest on its rooftop. The driver and a back seat passenger were still inside the car when the first people arriving to help the injured.

The crash occurred just after 7 am as the driver rounded an infamous curve on the 500 block of Currytown Town Road and lost control of the car, hit a culvert in a driveway, and began to tumble at least six times for the next 75-80 yards.

The injured did not speak English; however, a woman was on hand who translated as First Responders and EMS treated the patients. The ejected, two small children and one of the women, were the most seriously injured.

The driver, a Hispanic male, was the least injured and the last to be immobilized. He sat on the edge of the yard watching as the two women and two children were being treated in the yards of two neighboring homes.

All five were rushed to the MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta.

The crash blocked all traffic on Currytown Road for an hour before one lane could be opened back up to direct traffic around the scene. Sheriff’s Deputies, Merriwether Firefighters directed traffic as a State Trooper arrived and began investigating the crash.

A man on the scene said he was in front of the Honda prior to the wreck. “He passed me right after we got on Currytown,” he said. “Then he got caught behind another car, but they turned off around the Fish Camp, and he was gone.” Moments later he rounded the curve and saw the wreckage. “I wasn’t surprised he wrecked. He was flying.”

As he approached one of the small children injured, “I thought he was dead because he wasn’t making a sound,” he said. Then the child began to cry and he cleared the airway to help him breath. “I didn’t want him to choke on all the blood.”
