Fire destroys home and garage apartment

web posted December 7, 2006

MERRIWETHER – The Merriwether, County Line, and Belvedere Fire Departments responded to a fire at 424 Hickory Drive Wednesday around 2pm. When firefighters arrived the two structures, a mobile home and a two car garage with an upstairs apartment, were fully engulfed. Sheriff’s Deputies closed the road as firefighters ran hoses from a nearby fire hydrant.

Several explosions were heard as the fire ravaged the structures and electrical power sparked. The fire was brought under control in about an hour and firemen continued to cool the remaining embers until everything was extinguished.

The fire was believed to have started in the garage and apartment directly behind the home and spread across the ground then igniting the home from underneath.

Firefighters left the scene shortly before 5pm. Both structures were completely destroyed. The family was not at home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries.

Trenton Firemen responded to a fire earlier in the day on Watson Road around 9:30am. In that fire, also a mobile home, the home was heavily damaged. There were no reported injured.
