Merriwether Fire Department holds Christmas Banquet

web posted December 7, 2006

MERRIWETHER – The Merriwether Volunteer Fire Department held their annual Christmas Banquet Wednesday night at the North Augusta Country Club with only one or two firemen unable to attend. Fire Chief Faye Fulmer spoke to Firefighters, their spouses, and a few quests including County Treasurer Arlene Traxler about the year. “We answered 196 calls this year,” Chief Fulmer said, “61 of those were fires and 27 were brush fires.” In addition the department responded to 107 First Responder calls.

The department also responded to ten “other calls” which Chief Fulmer said were weather calls such as cutting downed trees from roadways. In addition, firefighters received over 1,000 hours in fire training over the year. The department also purchased a new Rescue Truck that is being well used.

Several awards were also given to firefighters. For the MDA Boot Award firefighters Wes Brown, David Bunch, Randy Carpenter, Joanne Cullum, Al Delaughter, Ky Emmons, Shane Emmons, Faye Fulmer, Ray Johnson, Jason Loehr, Jerry Miller, Ricky Miller, Ricky Moxley, Jason Sikes, and Ron Toole were recognized.

For Fire Prevention week Wade Barnes, Paul Bunch, David Bunch, Shane Emmons, Faye Fulmer, Heather Grimes, Chris Huffman, Jerry Miller, and Jason Sikes were also given certificates of appreciation.

Chief Fulmer was chosen Officer of the Year by the department for the fifth year in a row. Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Joey Smith, who works full time in Richmond County as a firefighter. Rookie of the Year was given to Jason Sikes.

EdgefieldDaily.com salutes all volunteer Firefighters for their service and dedication.
