Copper theft leaves $15,000 in damages

web posted December 8, 2007
Below: Sheriff's Investigator Jimmy Smith processes crime scene
MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether business owner arrived Friday morning just after 8 am to discover all four of the air conditioning units at the business destroyed and all the copper removed. Talbert and Moore Financial Services, located on the 1300 block of West Martintown Road, has regrettably joined the ranks of many local businesses and churches to suffer such a theft.

Though the thief or thieves will only gain between $20 and $30 for the stolen copper, the business will have to replace the equipment at a cost ranging between $15,000 and $17,000, according to the estimate provided at the scene.

The crime is considered felony grand theft. An investigator processed the scene for evidence and the case remains under investigation. Scrap copper is currently bringing between $2.50 to $3.00 a pound.
