Merriwether gets two voting precincts

EDGEFIELD – The plan to split the Merriwether voting precinct has been approved Tricia Gordon, head of Voter Registration, announced Monday morning. “We tried to keep the number of voters in each precinct at around 2,500.” New voter registration cards should be mailed out in January.

The main dividing line for the new precincts is Currytown Road Ms. Gordon said. “Those with even number address will be in one precinct and those with odd in the other,” adding the other roads which are also used as lines will have the same circumstances. “We wanted to start now so people will know where to go vote at election time.” She said.

Splitting the single precinct into two will alleviate the hours long wait that had become all too regular at the Merriwether Middle School voting precinct. "We had a lot of complaints about people having to wait three hours to vote," Ms. Gordon said. Merriwether precinct was the largest in the county with the Trenton precinct running second. Ms. Gordon said she did not believe it would be long before Merriwether would have to be split again, "the area is just growing so fast it is going to happen."

Merriwether precinct 7 will be the lower portion of the old precinct and Merriwether precinct 12 will be from Highway 25 and Sweetwater Road to Currytown Road to Martintown. From there the precinct line will follow Martintown Road to Republican Road to Johns Road then Old Stage Road over to Jacob McKie Road to Highway 25 south back to Sweetwater.

Merriwether Precinct 7 will continue to vote at Merriwether Middle School and Merriwether Precinct 12 will vote at the Merriwether Fire Station 2 on Sweetwater Road at Moore Road. Ms. Gordon said anyone with questions should call her office at 803-637-4072 or 637-7154.

Editor's note: The change is not creating another council seat or school board seat, just where people go to vote.
