Man
shoots neighbor's dog in front of child
web posted December 13, 2005 MERRIWETHER – A Stephens Road resident returned to her home with her two children when she spotted a man walking across her yard with a gun. The woman confronted the man and according to incident reports asked what he was doing and he told her he had just shot her dog. He then walked back to his house and went inside. The woman and her children saw the dog lying dead in the yard and the children became, “very upset”. Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputy Al Moore and Sgt. Robert Velasco responded to the call and spoke with the woman and also her neighbors who witnessed the shooting. The neighbor stated the man had come to her door asking who the dog belonged to and stated he was going to shoot and kill the dog. According to her the man then walked over to the victim’s house and pointed the rifle at the dog and shot him. The neighbor said her eleven year old grand daughter was in the yard at the time and she began crying and also was, “very upset.” Deputy Moore went to the man’s house and interviewed him about the reported shooting at which time the man admitted to shooting the dog but said he did it because the dog had attacked his dog over a week ago. Deputy Moore asked if he had reported the attack and the man said no. AT that time Deputy Moore arrested 46 year old Richard Maroney, of the 1500 block of Stephens Road and charged him with malicious injury to animal or personal property. Sheriff’s Sgt. Velasco seized a Savage .243 rifle with a scope. The case has been turned over to Sheriff’s Investigators and more charges could be forthcoming pending the completion of the investigation. For
