As rain falls, accident numbers go up Thursday
web posted December 16, 2005

MERRIWETHER – As the cold rain fell Thursday afternoon the number of accidents in the county began to rise. Shortly after 4:00 pm Deputies and rescue crews were dispatched to a rear-end collision at the 1900 block of Martintown Road that had the roadway blocked for over an hour. Fortunately no one was injured in the crash.

A Lincoln Continental was making a left turn into a driveway just past Currytown Road and Martintown Road when a 19 year old woman tried to stop her Toyota Corolla but said her, “brakes just locked up,” and the car slid into the rear of the Lincoln. The Lincoln suffered little damage to the rear bumper but the Toyota was heavily damaged in the front end.

Volunteers with the Merriwether Fire Department assisted with traffic control along with Sheriff’s Deputies until the South Carolina Highway Patrol could arrive on the scene. Charges were said to be pending the outcome of the investigation for the young woman.

Other collisions reported about the same time were an overturned car on Highway 25 at Moores Drive, with no injuries, and another crash on Plumb Branch Road which also had no injuries. Drivers are asked to slow down on wet roads and to leave extra space between yourself and the car in front of you to allow for braking.
