Woman crashes new car on the way home web posted December 28, 2005

MERRIWETHER – A woman heading home to Edgefield Tuesday afternoon in her new car lost control and ended up going down an embankment on Sweetwater Road just past Briggs Road. The woman ran off the right-hand side of the road, veered back onto the roadway, but overcorrected and ended up sliding on the narrow grass shoulder before being stopped by a line of small trees about a third of the way down the steep drop-off.

The woman was uninjured but did receive an initial assessment by Edgefield County EMS, she refused to be transported for further evaluation. One witness behind the woman said she, “ran off the edge of the road, and snatched it back on the road then back off the road.” The man said the woman was not going more than 45 MPH at the time, “when she hit the brakes she was on the grass and it was all over then - she slid right down there,” he said.  The Ford Escort LX came to rest on several small trees a short distance down the more than thirty foot drop-off.

The location of the wreck was just yards away from a highway cross placed for another wreck at the location. That crash resulted in the death of the driver a little more than a year ago. “She was very lucky,” a SC Highway Patrol Officer said at the scene.

The woman said she did not feel lucky at the time it happened. “I just bought the car and was driving it home for the first time.” The car still had the dealer price sticker in the window and paper tags. “I spent all my money paying for it and the insurance, now I’m broke and have a wrecked car,” she said.

The wreck caused a traffic tie-up for almost two hours on Sweetwater Road until the car could be raised from the embankment. The crash scene was in the middle of a curve which hindered traffic control.
