  Gravel spill halts traffic on Sweetwater Road web posted December 27, 2007  MERRIWETHER –
Traffic on Sweetwater Road
was disrupted for over an hour after over a ton of large gravel was
found spread over a large portion of the roadway just before 2 pm
Wednesday at the intersection of Mealing Road and Sweetwater Road.
Deputies had to direct traffic around the scene until the road could be
cleared. All traffic was blocked at times while the gravel was removed.The gravel is believed to have been accidentally dumped on the road when a gravel truck made a left turn from Mealing Road onto Sweetwater Road. The driver did not stop to report the spill. Large gravel trucks are known to travel back road when overloaded in an effort to avoid weigh stations. A passing crew of workers hauling a tractor with a front-end loader stopped and assisted in clearing the gravel from the roadway. They left the scene without providing their names or the name of the company they worked for. Deputies and a State Trooper thanked the good Samaritans for their help. South Carolina Department of Transportation workers also arrived on the scene to sweep the remaining debris from the roadway. ©
