Several
loads of firewood reported stolen in Merriwether
web posted December 29, 2005 MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether man called the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office to report a theft of firewood Wednesday morning. The wood was stored in an old barn and shed and when one of the owners drove by they noticed several truck loads of wood were missing. Edgefield County Deputies Anthony Rackard and Trek Bryant responded to the call. The barn, located almost a half mile down a private dirt road, was said to have been the target of previous such thefts that went unreported. Last year the owners placed a gate at the end of the road to prevent thefts of the wood. That did not prevent a similar theft last year nor this year. The wood, all hardwood and cured since the summer, is said to be cut at two lengths and the larger size is two to two and a half feet in length, too large to burn in most fireplaces. At least four large truckloads of wood were stolen between the hours of 6:00 pm Tuesday night and 8:00 am Wednesday morning. Sheriff’s Investigator Phil Ireland is investigating the theft. The value of the wood was estimated at more than $200. The area of wood stolen was six feet high by twelve feet wide and ten feet deep or 720 cubic feet. For
