Christmas Eve thefts from cars now total over $12,000
web
posted December 30, 2009
MERRIWETHER – The Edgefield County
Sheriff’s Office has stepped up patrols in a section of Merriwether
after thieves broke into almost two dozen vehicles and made off with
over $12,000 in property, electronics, guns, and one families Christmas
presents for their children. An initial report of the incident was
published on Saturday, but the breath and scope of the thefts and
reports continued coming in through Sunday. Official incident reports
were not released until Tuesday.
The first report of a theft came in just after 5 am Christmas Day. When
deputies arrived at the Copeland Circle home they noticed vehicles at
surrounding homes had doors open or windows broken out. An investigator
was called to the scene and deputies made a house by house search of
the area finding at least fifteen vehicles entered. Though some were in
disarray with nothing missing, others were not so lucky.
Electronics, laptops, a GPS Tom Tom, clothes, pocket books, cash,
jewelry, checkbooks, were among items reported stolen. Three weapons
were also taken from two vehicles including a Keltec .380 pistol from a
truck parked at a Mealing Road home and two guns taken from a truck
parked on nearby Westwood Court, a Winchester M70 Carbine .270 rifle
with scope and a Remington 1187 shotgun with a wooden stock.
By Monday the total in property taken from the surrounding area totaled
$12,180. The thefts are believed to have taken place some time
Christmas Eve.
The cases are being actively investigated at this time and very little
additional information is available. The Sheriff’s Office has stepped
up patrols in the area to prevent further thefts.
According to incident reports, one victim stated he noticed a white van
occupied by two black males driving through the neighborhood prior to
the incidents. The man told deputies that when he looked at the men
they both turned their heads away from him, reports state.
Anyone with information or who may have seen suspicious activity in the
Murrah Road and Copeland Circle area Christmas Eve is asked to call the
Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office at 803-637-5337 or 803-278-1625.
