Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Chess Club Sweeps ”Gamecock Open VI” in Columbia

web posted December 10, 2007
COLUMBIA – Competing individually, as no team prizes were offered, and comprising five of the eight competitors at the 6th Gamecock Open in Columbia, S.C., it was certain that our Merriwether Mavericks would finish well.  Finish well they did, however, unusually.  The match had to be decided by a computer tiebreaker program when Alex Thibodeau, Tori Whatley, and Carlton Wren had each won 4 of their 5 games and tied for 1st!

Based on their own rated strengths and the rated strengths of the players that they faced, the computer analysis scored Carlton Wren as the winner of the Gamecock Open VI!  Second place went to Alex Thibodeau, while third place was awarded to Tori Whatley.

Max Hall and Christian Padgett also scored over-the-board victories and gained useful experience that will surely help them on March 8th, when the Mavericks will accept the challenge of the South Carolina State Scholastic Championships.

“While our club continues to mature competitively, my primary focus is to ensure that all of our players at both the elementary, and middle school level, are well prepared and competition-ready.  We have a lot of work to do in January and February, and I’m looking forward to seeing this great group of kids gel into a more powerful tournament chess team”, said Coach David Whatley.
