Merriwether Elementary Student’s Artwork Published In 2008 Economic Concepts Calendar

web posted December 18, 2007
MERRIWETHER – Martin Strauss and Caroline Yano are two of 16 students from around the state whose illustrations are featured in the SC Council on Economic Education’s 2008 Economic Concepts Calendar.

The Merriwether Elementary School students competed in the annual calendar poster contest sponsored by the SC Council on economic Education (SCCEE) and the Charlotte Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. The goal of the contest is to promote financial literacy and economic education among elementary and middle school students.

“Financial literacy is a big topic in the news today. It’s become more apparent than ever that the earlier we teach students about personal finance and how economics works in our country and around the globe, the more successful they will be,” said Jeffrey S. Kane, Charlotte Branch senior vice president in charge and SCCEE board member. “The eagerness of students to participate each year in the contest clearly shows they want to learn about economics even in elementary and middle schools.”

SCCEE President Helen Meyers added, “We are pleased to work in partnership with Charlotte Fed to provide this learning experience for students. Our goal is to help young people learn an economic way of thinking and it’s very rewarding to see that students are catching on to these important concepts.”

Strauss and Yano won this honor last school year as third and fourth grade students at Merriwether Elementary School. Each student received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.

The contest was created as a way for students to have fun with economics while review economic concepts and principles found in the SC State Social Studies Standards. Merriwether Elementary teacher Paula Robinson submitted Strauss and Yano’s winning illustrations which depict Productive Resources and Scarcity.
