Merriwether Middle School Receives $2,500 Monsanto Fund Grant web posted March 27, 2007 JOHNSTON – Merriwether Middle School has received a $2,500 grant to implement a project called “Bits – n – Pieces” that focuses on hands-on experiences in science that leads to “real-life” applications. The grant will help fund Video Microscopes that will enhance the instruction of animal and plant dissection by allowing the teacher to guide the entire class through dissecting techniques and anatomical identification in a more efficient manner. These microscopes will also be used to study rocks and minerals. Also included in the grant funding will be the purchase of a weather monitor that will allow students to collect information at school for them to see how weather monitoring and predicting weather affects their daily lives. The sixth grade engages in an in depth weather study where this station can be an important implementation of their observations. This will also add a weather portion for the local school TV morning broadcast. Other items included in the grant proposal and funded through the Monsanto Award are eyewash stations, Classroom Jeopardy, Drawing Compasses, Measuring Wheel for use to measure distance in astronomy, speed and motion, as well as other distance experiments. Debbie McCain, Science Department Chair for Merriwether Middle stated that the school is very excited about the Monsanto Grant Award. “Our students are going to be thrilled with this equipment and our science teachers at Merriwether Middle know that the use of these tools with their instruction will only enhance science education for the students.” For
