Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Chess Team takes more honors

web posted May 21, 2007
MERRIWETHER – The Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Chess Team competed on Saturday, May 19th at Schofield Middle School in Aiken, S.C.  The C.S.R.A. Chess Scholastic Open was a U.S. Chess Federation-rated event, and once again, our team performed admirably taking home one-third of the twelve trophies that were offered at the event.

This competition pitted elementary, middle, and high school players from Evans, Ga., Aiken, S.C., and Statesboro, Ga. against one another.  In several instances, Merriwether Elementary and Merriwether Middle School players defeated middle and high school players.

Merriwether Middle School student Alex Thibodeau won an impressive four out five games and took second place in the “Under 600” category.  Carlton Wren pulled off a strong finish winning three out of five games earning him third place in the same category.

Tori Whatley from Merriwether Elementary took third place in the “Under 900” category.  As a team, Merriwether Elementary students Kiersten Lee, Chris McCain, Tori Whatley, and Gregory Baucom were awarded the 3rd place team trophy defeating teams from Schofield Middle School, and South Aiken High School.
