Merriwether Middle school students gear up for South Carolina Bar Mock
Trial Competition
web
posted November 15, 2008
MERRIWETHER – Middle school students from
the Midlands region, including Merriwether Middle School, will compete
in the South Carolina Bar Regional Middle School Mock Trial Competition
Saturday, November 22, at the Richland County Courthouse. The
competition will begin at 8:45 a.m. The courthouse is located at 1701
Main St. in Columbia.
Participating schools include Blythewood Middle School, Covenant
Classical Christian School, Crayton Middle School, Dutch Fork Middle
School, E.L. Wright Middle School, Hand Middle School, Heathwood Hall
Middle School, Kelly Mill Middle School, Leavelle McCampbell Middle
School, Lexington Middle School, Merriweather Middle School, St.
Andrews Middle School and St. Joseph School.
Students will present the plaintiff and defense sides of a fictitious
case before a panel of local volunteer lawyers. Additionally, students
will fill the roles of defendant, witnesses and bailiff. Each team will
be judged on its presentation skills, rather than the legal merits of
the case.
This year’s fictitious case, State of South Carolina v. Kinsley
Williams, was created by the LRE Committee and the Middle School Mock
Trial Subcommittee. The case involves Winston High School, a boarding
school in York County, and a school-sponsored chat room for students
and faculty with discussions ranging from class information to social
dialogs. The plaintiff, Jamie Anderson, a senior at Winston High
School, begins receiving dark and disturbing messages in the chat room
and eventually goes to the police after receiving a threatening e-mail
message.
Kinsley Williams is arrested for cyber stalking one week after Anderson
goes to the police and admits to writing two of the implicated
messages, but he denies sending the other messages. To read more
information about the case or about the Middle School Mock Trial
program, go to http://www.scbar.org/msmt.
Ten teams from five regional competitions will advance to the state
competition on Saturday, December 6 at the Marc H. Westbrook Lexington
County Judicial Center located at 212 S. Lake Dr. in
Lexington.
The mock trial program is sponsored by the South Carolina Bar’s Law
Related Education (LRE) Division, which was developed in 1976 to
improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education.
The mock trial program is made possible through an IOLTA grant from the
South Carolina Bar Foundation.
The South Carolina Bar, which has a membership of more than 12,500
lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and
understanding of the law.
