Edgefield County Solicitor Arrested for DWI
Edgefielddaily.com web posted May 6, 2005 Solicitor Donnie Myers was attending a National District Attorneys Association conference last week at the Grove Park Inn resort in Asheville when he was spotted by Ashville police driving “suspiciously” at 2:46 am. Officers pulled Solicitor Myers over and also found an open can of Budweiser beer in the car. Myers claims he was looking for a Waffle House to get some solid food for his wife, Vance, who he said suffers from Crohn’s disease. He said he had been at the conference until about 9 pm and returned to his hotel room around 10 pm. Myers claims his wife woke him up about 2 am complaining of severe pain so he left to retrieve some food, which helps with her symptoms. Myers has not commented on why he would have taken along a can of beer for the errand. Myers stated he had did not know what, or how much, he had consumed at the conference before he left. The Buncombe County, N.C. Sheriff’s Department said Solicitor Myers was placed under arrest after failing both preliminary roadside tests and two in-house Breathalyzer tests with readings of .14 and .13. The legal limit in the state is .08. Reports show he was driving a Lincoln that is owned by the County of Lexington. The county had budgeted money for him to purchase a Crown Victoria but Myers had used state funds to “upgrade” to a Lincoln. The car was impounded and returned the next day. Solicitor Myers did not report the incident when he returned from the conference according to reports stating it, “was none of their business.” In addition to the DWI charge, which could carry fines and as much as 60 days in jail, and the open container charge which also carries a fine, Myers could face disciplinary charges by the S.C. Supreme Court. “This could be a career ender,” said one law enforcement officer who did not want to be identified. Solicitor Myers was released on the promise he would return to face trial. He has a hearing scheduled for May 23, 2005. He has not commented on how he will plead in the case against him. Myers has been the solicitor for Lexington, Saluda, Edgefield and McCormick counties since 1976. Return to Main Page
