North Carolina man ruled sixth fatality in Aiken County after
hit-and-run collision
web
posted February 25, 2008
NORTH AUGUSTA – A North Carolina man
became the sixth traffic fatality in Aiken County around 3 am Saturday
morning in a hit-and-run collision on Atomic Road, Aiken County Coroner
Tim Carlton said. 24 year old, Gregorio C. Cruz of Hendersonville NC
was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from the Ford
Expedition he was traveling in when it was struck by a 1992 brown Ford
F150 pickup truck. It is unknown if Mr. Cruz was the driver or
passenger of the Expedition.
According to Coroner Carlton, allegedly Mr. Cruz and another occupant
were traveling north on Atomic Rd in the early morning when their
vehicle was sideswiped by a pick up truck traveling south on Atomic Rd.
The light brown 1992 Ford F150 pick up swerved into the northbound lane
and struck Cruz's vehicle causing it to leave the road. The Expedition
struck a guardrail causing Cruz and the other male occupant to be
ejected onto the roadway. The other unidentified occupant of the
Expedition was taken to the MCG Trauma Unit in critical condition. The
Expedition continued off the road and down a 40 ft ravine.
The pickup and its occupant or occupants attempted to flee the scene,
however the damage was too extensive and the truck was abandoned
approximately 3/4 of mile from the crash scene and the occupants fled.
North Augusta Public Safety is in the process of locating the owner of
the light brown Ford F150 pick up truck. The crash is being
investigated by NADPS and the Aiken County Coroner's Office. Any
information that the public may have should be reported to these
offices. It is expected that the driver and /or passengers are probably
injured and will seek medical care.
