North Augusta man dies in fiery crash Sunday

NORTH AUGUSTA – A North Augusta man became
the 20th fatality in Aiken County this year when he lost control of his
1995 Honda coup around 9:45 Sunday morning resulting in a fiery crash.
Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said 35-year-old Gregory A. Maree was
pronounced dead on the scene of the crash.
The crash occurred just past East Buena Vista Road on US Highway 1 in
North Augusta Mr. Maree was traveling south toward Augusta, Ga. on
Highway 1 when he left the roadway in a curve and struck the sidewalk
near the Cheap Cigarettes store. Mr. Maree’s car then struck two
abandoned above ground gas tanks, which were empty at the time.
The collision with the gas tanks caused the vehicle Marlee was driving
to catch fire. Coroner Carlton said he was pronounced dead at the scene
due to multiple body traumas. Mr. Maree was not wearing a seatbelt at
the time of the collision.
This crash is being investigated by the North Augusta Dept. of Public
Safety and the Aiken County Coroner's Office. Toxicology test results
are pending.
The death marks the 20th fatality in Aiken County in 2009.
