Democrat's wording on resolution could delay or end MOX project at SRS web posted January 31, 2007 WASHINGTON D.C. – Representative Gresham Barrett (R-SC) is not happy with language that has been included in a Continuing Resolution by the Congressional Democrat leadership in Washington concerning the Mixed Oxide (MOX) project at the Savannah River Site. In addition to the added language by the Democrat Majority, Rep. Barrett said even more disturbing, “is the apparent desire by some to include language that would effectively kill the program entirely.” The vote on the resolution will be held today. “Unfortunately, it appears the Democrat Leadership chose to include language in a CR that further delays the MOX program. It is highly unusual for language affecting a program with such national security implications to be handled in this manner. No discussion, no debate, no amendments - the hope, it seems, was to let this sail through the House and Senate with no one noticing,” Barrett said in a release Tuesday. The MOX project at SRS has cost over $1 billion since it began and is paramount in National Security matters. Though delays have been encountered, they were, “out of our control, due mainly to issues between the U.S. and Russia, in large part those issues have been resolved,” Barrett said and that any delay would cost taxpayers an additional $20 million a month or could result in the program ending altogether. In conversation with the Majority Whip, Rep. Clyburn (D-SC), Barrett said he appreciated the work Clyburn did to try to stop the language from being added. “It seems the reason for this delay lies solely with members of Congress holding up the process,” Rep. Barrett said adding, “Any member who supports this language owes the people of South Carolina and taxpayers across the nation an explanation as to why.” Rep. Barrett said, "South Carolinians, and the SRS community, have always stepped up in support of our national security interests. This time is no different. We are committed to seeing this project through to completion. I thank the members of the SC and GA delegations for their support, and ask them to join me in continuing to educate our colleagues as to the importance of the MOX program." For
