 President Bush admits “immigration” bill is amnesty web posted June 27, 2007 WASHINGTON D.C. – In what White House Officials are calling a “misspeak” by President Bush, the President stated that the immigration bill actually provides amnesty to illegal aliens. “You know, I've heard all the rhetoric -- you've heard it, too -- about how this is amnesty. Amnesty means that you've got to pay a price for having been here illegally, and this bill does that.” President Bush said the bill, “also recognizes it's in our nation's interest to bring people out of the shadows; that there's got to be a way forward that recognizes there is a penalty for being here illegally -- on the other hand, that recognizes that each person has got worth and dignity.” The measure passed the Senate on a 64 to 35 vote with one Senator not voting. After to voting for cloture the limits to stopping the bill from passage became harder. No more than thirty hours of debate may occur. No Senator may speak for more than one hour. No amendments may be moved unless they were filed on the day in between the presentation of the petition and the actual cloture vote. All amendments must be relevant to the debate. Certain debates on procedure are not permissible. The presiding officer gains additional power in controlling debate and no other matters may be considered until the question upon which cloture was invoked is disposed of during the process.
