Rep. Nikki Haley tops GOP hopefulls in first debate in Governor's race
web
posted September 24, 2009
NEWBERRY – The first debate of the
Republican candidates for Governor took place Tuesday night at the
Newberry Opera House and was sponsored by WIS-TV and the Newberry and
Laurens Republican Party. The sold out debate featured Republican
candidates Andre Bauer, Henry McMaster, Nikki Haley, Gresham Barrett,
and Larry Grooms. The debate was broadcast live online by WIS-TV 10 and
a poll conducted of those watching picked Rep. Nikki Haley as the
winner with 44% of the votes between the five candidates.
According to WIS-TV, the poll of those who watched the debate gave the
following results as to the winner:
Nikki Haley: 44%
Henry McMaster: 23%
Andre Bauer: 13%
Larry Grooms: 11%
Gresham Barrett: 9%
Rep. Haley wasted no time capitalizing on the first poll by touting the
victory to supporters.
“Nearly half of those watching the debate thought our message of
getting government back to work for the people, protecting taxpayers,
creating a healthy, competitive business climate through tax reform,
and bringing transparency to government is exactly what this state
needs.”
Rep. Haley said the early victory was a boost to her campaign as it
grows and she gets her message out across the state. “That we so
convincingly won the first major event of this campaign is huge, and
gives us exactly the kind of the momentum that will carry us across the
finish line next June.”
Though the victory from the poll of those watching live remains in
tact; a continuing online poll on WIS-TV’s website allowing readers to
vote without reading or viewing the debate has Lt. Governor Andre Bauer
with the lead at 54% and Rep. Haley in second place at 21%. Attorney
General Henry McMaster was next at 14%, Congressman Gresham Barrett
with 7%, and State Sen. Larry Grooms at 4%
