New search engine give users anonymity on the web
web
posted January 29, 2010
WEBNEWS – A new and unique search provider
has launched a secure way to search and surf the web. Startpage is
different from such engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing, which collects
and maintains personal information from users that use the sites. Not
so with Startpage. The new search engine collects no personal data of
its users and can even let users browse the internet anonymously.
Katherine Albrecht, a spokesperson for Startpage, stated, "It would
blow people's minds if they knew how much information the big search
engines have on the American public," she told WND in an interview. "In
fact, their dossiers are so detailed they would probably be the envy of
the KGB."

"We're essentially telling them our entire life stories – stuff you
wouldn't even tell your mother – because you are in a private room with
a computer," she said. "We tend to think of that as a completely
private circumstance. But the reality is that they make a record of
every single search you do."
But Startpage is far different, they do not obtain any information from
those who use the search engine, so if the federal government came to
them seeking information on a user’s activities, “there won’t be any to
give them”.
Use of the search engine works the same as any other, but with every
result of a search a special link is provided, one shown as a “proxy
link”. By choosing this function the user’s computer never accesses the
site being visited.
Startpage will fetch the content of the site through their servers and
allow the user to view the content on their site without having to
worry about any viruses that may be contained on the site sought out
that could invade the user’s computer.
But beyond personal security, privacy is the main issue covered by
Startpage.
"As consumers, we almost have an obligation to stop using them (the
major search engines) until they behave themselves," Albrecht said.
"Sometimes you want to know private stuff. It doesn't mean you have
something to hide or are doing anything wrong. It just means you don't
want other people knowing what you're thinking about and looking up.
It's nobody's business."
"People are more concerned about online data retention policies than
ever before," said CEO Robert Beens. "We wanted to offer them a useful
tool and this proxy is a logical extension of our services, A search
engine is a starting point for people to visit other pages. Now our
users can take the privacy they get with Ixquick (Startpage) to the
next step, and go privately to the sites they have found as well. This
proxy completes the total search privacy picture."
Startpage launched is
services Thursday night and is now available for use.
