Relay for Life Riddle solved, $200 donation on its way
web
posted May 2, 2008
WEBNEWS – It seems the Relay for Life
Riddle has been solved. EdgefieldDaily.com has been inundated with
answers, most of them wrong, but others that answered correctly. Since
the idea of the riddle is to provide additional funding of the Relay
for Life fundraiser that may be a good thing. A check for $200 has been
issued for the event and will be delivered in the coming days to help
fight cancer.
The riddle, which stated:
Three men traveling together stop at an
Edgefield hotel. The room they are to share is said to cost $30.
So each pays $10 to rent the room and they are provided the key.
However, when the desk clerk checks the rate he discovers that the
particular room the men are sharing has a cost of only $25 and he calls
the bellhop to return the money the three overpaid.
The desk clerk gives the bellhop five $1 bills and tells him of the
situation and instructed him to return the over payment.
The bellhop, knowing there are only three men and five $1 bills,
decides that three $1 bills is easier to equally distribute and places
two of the $1 bills in his pocket as he knocks on the door.
When one of the men answers he tells them they were overcharged and
they were each due a $1 rebate and hands each of the men a $1 bill.
Each man paid $10 for the room and received a $1 rebate making the cost
of the room $9 for each of the men; therefore the cost of the room
combined is $27 (3x9=27). The bellhop pocketed $2 making the total cost
$29 (3x9=27 and 27+2=29).
Where is the missing dollar?
The riddle is in the way the math is presented. The cost of the room
was $30, or $10 each. When the rate was changed to $25 the cost per
person was $8.33 with a third of a penny equally distributed to the
three men.
Therefore the cost of the room would have totaled $8.33 each, the
dollar received back would have made the cost $9.33 which would equal
$28 and the two dollars taken by the bellhop making the total $30.
Those who solved the riddle were; Glenn Herlong, Alan Perano, Penny
Fell, Judy H. Holmes, James Ray, Danna Moore, Mark Fallaw, Rhonda
Tuberville, and Mandy Bell.
