PAC in senate race uses EdgefeieldDaily.com in attack ad

web posted September 7, 2007
WEBNEWS – EdgefieldDaily.com was provided a mass mailing purportedly sponsored by the South Carolinians for Responsible Government Political Action Committee (SCRG PAC) that is asking questions about Republican candidate Bill Hixon’s property values and sources EdgefieldDaily.com. Calls to the SCRG PAC went unanswered to confirm they are the ones responsible for the obviously expensive two-page, four sided, glossy color mail-out.

The color “slick” (a printing term for glossy color productions) states, “Bill Hixon’s Property Assessment: Just a Fraction of His Neighbors!” and provides a photo of Mr. Hixon and a large colored goldfish saying “Seems A Little Fishy”.

A November 1, 2006 EdgefieldDaily.com story is listed in the flyer (though not properly giving credit to EdgefieldDaily.com) of Mr. Hixon’s Edgefield County property values being far below market value. The story ran at the time reports of county officials whose tax records showed possible preferential treatment in assessments long before Sen. Tommy Moore resigned and Mr. Hixon entered the race as a candidate for the job.

Mr. Hixon said he received reports of similar mailings in McCormick County in addition to those in Edgefield County. Mr. Hixon said he had not seen the mail-out and EdgefieldDaily.com forwarded a copy of the mailer to his campaign office.

Mr. Hixon said he will review the information published and said that he has paid his taxes without question since acquiring the property. Hixon said he “gutted” the home and completely remodeled the structure but did not increase the square footage. “What they (the Edgefield County Tax Assessor’s Office) value the property at is not my job,” Hixon said.

At the time of the report Mr. Hixon’s tax records showed his home being assessed at a mere $15.59 a square foot. The mailer quotes an unsourced average of Mr. Hixon’s neighbors’ properties being assessed at “$40 per square foot”

EdgefieldDaily.com is not affiliated with the mail-out and has no connection to the South Carolinians for Responsible Government.

EdgefieldDaily.com does not endorse candidates for elective office.
