Bill
Hixon caught red-handed in inaccurate campaign mail out
web
posted September 15, 2007
WEBNEWS –
EdgefieldDaily.com does not
support any candidate for elected office. However, when a candidate
chooses to try to discredit EdgefieldDaily.com in campaign literature
for reporting facts, we take exception to that candidate and will no
longer sit on the sidelines. Republican Senate candidate Bill Hixon
chose to do just that and we welcome the opportunity to show who is
providing voters with “false” information, and it is not
EdgefieldDaily.com.
In campaign literature sent to voters on Friday, September 14, Mr.
Hixon’s campaign claimed, “Internet websites are also being used to
falsely attack Bill Hixon, including one website sponsored by an
opposing candidate, according to official Campaign Disclosure filings.”
The only website that any candidate has purchased advertising and
reported such on disclosure forms is Shane Massey’s advertisement on
EdgefieldDaily.com.
EdgefieldDaily.com is a certified media outlet with press credentials
and does not discriminate as to who purchases advertising space in our
publication. Just because Mr. Massey is the only candidate that chose
to advertise along side of our many other advertisers on Edgefield
County’s number one daily new outlet is not our problem.
When contacted on Friday Mr. Hixon claimed that he was not responsible
for the mailer and suggested we contact his campaign manager. Mr. Hixon
was quickly informed that we do not contact “campaign managers,” we
contact the candidate since he was the one running for office and
informed him he was solely responsible for the information he provided
to voters.
Mr. Hixon became adversarial in our conversation and confirmed
EdgefieldDaily.com was the focus of the mailer by stating our 2006
report on his property values was “false”. However, Mr. Hixon’s claim
is blatantly false and EdgefieldDaily.com has the hard
copy of information provided at the time of the report by the Edgefield County Tax Assessors Office.
In the November
1, 2006 report EdgefieldDaily.com correctly
reported that his 1,632
square foot brick home on 770 Murrah Road was valued at $15.59 a square
foot when, “A 2,406 home in Merriwether with vinyl siding rates a value
of $67.99 a square foot with just one acre of land.”
Mr. Hixon confirmed that he “gutted” the home and refurbished it
completely. “What
they (the Edgefield County Tax Assessor’s Office) value the property at
is not my job,” Hixon said in an interview on September 6. Hixon
did not refute the report at that time. In fact, Mr. Hixon said he
would have to “look into that information”.
In our conversation with Mr. Hixon on Friday, September 14, he claimed
his property was presently valued at just over $51 a square foot, still
far below
that of his neighbors if true, and still $17 a square foot below that
of the
same vinyl sided house used in our comparison. Even if his property had
been adjusted after our report, which would not have affected his tax
bill at the time, his property is still below market value.
In addition, Mr. Hixon is running radio ads claiming he is a “Reagan
Republican” yet he was the treasurer for Democrat Tommy Moore and
founded the “Republicans for Tommy Moore”. He voted in the Democrat
primaries and worked to get Republicans to “cross over” to support a
Democrat for elective office. So much for the “Reagan Republican” claim.
Mr. Hixon did not deny his support of Democrat Tommy Moore and even admitted he
expected that his support of a Democrat would cost him votes in his
Republican
candidacy as a replacement. "I'm sure it will,” Hixon said.
In addition Mr. Hixon has been chided for
listing people in his
campaign literature that do not support his election.
EdgefieldDaily.com has confirmed that some of those named as supporters
have never given their names to be used in his campaign literature.
EdgefieldDaily.com does not support any candidate for office, including
those that advertise with us. We remain objective and will continue to
do so in any political race.
However, when anyone, even by inference, tries to discredit our
reporting we will not refrain from pointing out the factual evidence
supporting our reports and the false claims by anyone, regardless of
who that
candidate may be, even if it is an advertiser.
The truth is not for sale.
