Midday crash sends husband and wife to hospital
web
posted May 26, 2009
Below: Rescuers prepare the husband for transport
NORTHSIDE – A
husband and wife traveling
to a funeral Monday afternoon ended up being taken by ambulance to the
Greenwood Hospital after their Mercury Mountaineer rolled over after it
was struck by a Ford Mustang GT at the intersection of Highways 25 and
378 around 1:30 pm. The initial call went out to Edgefield County EMS,
Northside Fire Department, Sheriff’s Deputies, and the Highway Patrol
reporting the couple was trapped inside the overturned SUV.
The Northside Fire Department was first on the scene and reported that
the couple was able to get out of the vehicle and was suffering from
unspecified injuries. EMS and firefighters immobilized the couple for
transport to Greenwood. The driver of the Mustang was uninjured and
refused medical treatment.

According to information provided at the scene, the couple was
traveling north on Highway 25 when they approached the intersection
with Highway 378 on their way to a funeral. A Georgia man driving east
on 378 possibly failed to stop at the stop sign and struck the driver’s
side of the Mountaineer causing the driver to loose control as the SUV
rolled at least once and landed on the passenger side on the shoulder
of the northbound highway.
Part of the left rear axle, tire, as well as other parts of the
SUV,
was strewn about the scene. The Mustang suffered heavy damage to the
front end and came to rest facing east on Highway 378 in the middle of
the road. Both vehicles
had to be towed from the scene. The driver of
the Mustang was going to be cited in the collision, though no charge
was available at the scene.
It took emergency crews nearly two hours to clear the scene and restore
all traffic to normal.
The intersection is infamous for severe collisions, one which took the
life of 11th Circuit Court Judge Marc
Westbrook on September 14, 2005 when the car driven by his court
clerk,
Randy Davis, was broadsided by a tractor-trailer truck. Davis was
airlifted to MCG in critical condition and Westbrook was pronounced
dead on the scene.
