One injured in violent crash

web posted June 21, 2007
NORTHSIDE – A one-car crash on North Martintown Road sent a Greenwood County man to the hospital Wednesday afternoon. The call came in to 9-1-1 just before 2:30pm reporting that a car had left the roadway and was in a heavily wooded area just across from China Grove Baptist Church. Sheriff’s Deputies and EMS were dispatched to the scene.

When deputies arrived they found the car hidden in the woods severely damaged and no occupants. A child safety seat was in the back of the car and the entire roof of the car had been flattened in the crash. This lead deputies to begin searching the area for the driver, and possibly a child passenger, that may have been ejected in the crash.

A check of local hospitals found that the driver had been driven to the Greenwood Regional Hospital and walked in to the Emergency Room for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. His condition and identity were not released. There were no other occupants in the car at the time of the crash.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the 2003 Honda Accord was traveling north on North Martintown Road when the driver lost control and left the northbound lane sideways before rolling and taking out several trees. The car came to rest right side up with the remains of a large Cedar tree on top.

Wrecker workers had to cut several trees down in order to pull the car from the woods. Officers and others on the scene were stunned that the driver survived the crash due to the extent of the damage done to the driver’s compartment.
