One Killed in Industrial Accident

web posted May 29, 2014  4:00 pm
- Updated 5:20 pm
NORTHSIDE One man is dead after being run over by a heavy equipment forklift at the Tides International lumber yard on Highway 430 near the intersection of Highway 378. Dispatchers received a 911 call just before 1 pm stating the man was laying face down but they did not know if he was breathing. Edgefield County EMS and First Responders raced to the scene and began CPR as they assessed his injuries.

The man was transported to the Edgefield County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett and the Sheriff's crime scene investigator went to inspect the incident location to document the scene and to interview the driver of the large forklift.

According to information gathered at the scene, the man was standing on a running board of the tractor talking to the driver about what lumber needed to be moved. The man apparently slipped off the tractor and was run over by the large duel wheels on the back of the lift.

Coroner Burnett said when the driver realized he had run over the man he was face up, but when the driver backed off of him he was rolled over facing the ground.

Burnett said there will be an autopsy in Newberry on Friday morning to determine cause of death, expected to be massive body trauma from being crushed under the wheels. "I will wait on the results of the autopsy to release the cause," Burnett said

The man's name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The investigation into the death is ongoing at this writing.
