Man jumps from moving patrol car to escape

web posted November 2, 2009
NORTHSIDE – What started out as a typical traffic stop for a possible intoxicated driver turned into a three-hour manhunt in the rain Halloween night. The initial arrest was made on Highway 378 near the Edgefield County line around 8 pm after a supervisor for the Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene. Deputies arrested 34-year-old Tony L. Brice on suspicion of DUI and having an open container of alcohol in the car. He was handcuffed and placed in a deputy’s car for transport to the Detention Center for booking. However, Mr. Brice had other plans.

As the deputy approached the intersection of Highways 278 and 25 north, the deputy began radioing for backup as Mr. Brice began kicking the back window of the patrol car until it broke. When the deputy began slowing down Mr. Brice jumped through the window and fled on foot, still handcuffed.

The deputy brought the car to a screeching halt and tried to catch Mr. Brice but lost sight of him as he disappeared into the darkness.

Additional deputies arrived on the scene and began setting up a perimeter and started searching for Brice. Help from other agencies including the Edgefield and Johnston Police Departments, State Highway Patrol, Department of Natural Resources, and the Bloodhound Team were all summoned to the scene to assist in the search.

Periods of heavy rain hampered the search as the minutes turned into hours.

Shortly before 11 pm Mr. Brice surrendered as officers closed in on his location. He was transported to the Edgefield County Hospital for treatment of possible injuries sustained while jumping from the moving patrol car. He was later released and booked into custody.

Brice was still being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center on Sunday and has been charged with DUI first offense and open container. There is also a custody hold in place for additional pending charges.

No bond hearing date was available.
