Man and baby airlifted, six injured in Sunday morning crash

web posted December 15, 2008
NORTHSIDE – Six people were injured, two seriously, when an SUV and a truck collided at the intersection of Highway 378 and Pleasant Lane Sunday morning. The first calls to 9-1-1 began to come in around 11:30 with reports that at least one person involved was trapped inside one of the vehicles.

Northside Firefighters and First Responders arrived on the scene within minutes, as well as Edgefield County EMS, and began working to treat the injured. Calls for two AirTrans helicopters were issued to transport the most seriously injured patients. The most seriously injured was the man who was driving the pickup truck pulling a trailer, who was possibly suffering from a broken left femur, hip, and in severe pain. He was conscious and alert at the time of being freed from the wreckage.

The second most seriously injured was an infant girl. It was unknown if the infant was in a car seat at the time of the crash, but was immobilized in a car seat and taken to the landing zone for transport by one of the helicopters.

In all, three adults and three children, including the infant, were taken to the MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta for treatment. Ages for those injured were not available for this writing.

According to information provided from the scene, the driver of the pickup truck was traveling north on Pleasant Lane and pulled out in front of the Ford Expedition traveling eastbound on Highway 378 when the truck was struck broadside. The crash is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The sightline from Pleasant Lane looking towards the eastbound lane of 378 is hindered by a steep hill just before the intersection.

The condition of the remaining patients was not immediately available.

The crash closed traffic on Highway 378 periodically for over two hours. All traffic at the intersection of Highways 25 and 378 was closed off for over half an hour as it served as a landing zone for the helicopters.

The other crash victims were transported by two Edgefield County EMS ambulances.
