Curtis Ashley Abel

JOHNSTON – The funeral service for Ashley Abel, age 77, 6 Dogwood Lane, will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Johnston United Methodist Church at 3 pm. Private burial will follow in Mt of Olives Cemetery. A reception will be held from 4:30 -6:30 pm following the service at Pine Ridge Country Club. Mr. Abel, widower of Kay Newman Abel, passed away January 19, 2011. He was the son of the late Ash and Marie Abel. A resident of Johnston, SC since 1959, Ashley was a licensed land surveyor and registered forester who dearly loved the land and people of Edgefield county and surrounding counties. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1955. He was a member of the SC National Guard from 1956-1979. A founding member of Edgefield County Republican Party, he was a past president and member of the Johnston Jaycees. A member of Pine Ridge Country Club and Johnston Sertoma Club, he also served as chairman of the Edgefield County School Board. He was a member of Johnston United Methodist Church. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ashley and Kimberly Abel of Greenville, SC; a daughter and son-in-law, April and Scott Long of Myrtle Beach, SC; and five grandchildren, Ash and Marjorie Abel and Grace-McLane, Miller, and Grainger Long. He was preceded in death by his sister Gretchen Glacken of Staten Island, NY. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004. Bland Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
