Charles Gary (Sonny) Benfield, Sr. web posted April 13, 2009 EDGEFIELD – Mr. Charles Gary (Sonny) Benfield, Sr., 68, of Edgefield, died April 9, 2009 from complications related to a stroke at Edgefield County Hospital. A native of York, Sonny was born to late Preston M. and Mary Merritt Benfield on June 26, 1940. He married Kathy Peeler of Edgefield on July 22, 1977. He retired from the Edgefield County School District and served on the Edgefield Town Council for five years. During his retirement, Sonny enjoyed carpentry, hunting, fishing, and his “morning coffee club.” Sonny was known for his charismatic personality, determination and love of life. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Sonny was always surrounded by his family and friends, He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kathy Peeler Benfield of Edgefield; son Justin and wife Erin of Greenville; son Gary, Jr. and fiancé Angie of North Augusta; granddaughters Madison Benfield of Greenville and Amaya Emmons of North Augusta; step-son David Satcher and wife Michelle; Step-daughter Lisa Satcher Smith and husband Bill; sister Fran Powell and husband Larry of Irmo. Family will receive friends Monday April 13, 2009 from 5 to 7 P.M. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 1 P.M. on Tuesday April 14, 2009 at Philadelphia United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2260 Chester Hwy, York, S.C. 29745. In lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to the church. Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. © Copyright 2009
