James Patrick Florida, Sr.
Retired Richmond Co. Sheriff’s Dept.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Entered into rest, Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at his residence, Mr. James Patrick Florida, Sr., 67, husband of Mary Prather Florida.

Mr. Florida was a native of Flint, MI and resided in the Augusta area for the past 49 years. He was a veteran of the US Army. Mr. Florida worked for 26 ½ years with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department where he was selected as Deputy of the year in 1970. He was a member of the South Augusta Exchange Club from 1978 until 1989 and was chosen Exchangite of the year in 1984; a member of the Richmond Masonic Lodge No. 412 and a member of the First Baptist Church of Augusta and the Cason Bruker Sunday School Class.

Family members in addition to his wife include his sons and daughters-in-law: James “Jimmy” Florida and wife, Angela of North Augusta, SC, Andrew “Andy” Florida and wife, “Stephanie” of Augusta; grandchildren: James Florida III, Brandi Florida, Joel Florida, Meghan Florida, Gracie Florida; sister: Peggy (Don) Grove; brothers: Bill, Bob (Clara), David (Janice), Joe (Sue), Tom (Verna), John and Mike (Carol) Florida, all of Michigan and sister-in-law: Karen. Mr. Florida was preceded in death by his sister, Geneiveve and brother, Sam Florida.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 23, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. Jake Malone and Chaplain Ken Gross officiating. Pallbearers will be Duane Usry, John Florida, Mike Florida, Barry Playford, Skip Playford, Robert Hawes, Ernest Odom, Jr., Fred Bruggemann, Sheriff Ronnie Strength, Ken Eskew and Henry Black. Honorary pallbearers will be Cason Bruker Sunday School Class and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the family or to First Baptist Church of Augusta, 3500 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30909.

A Memorial Service under the auspices of Richmond Lodge No. 412 was held Thursday Evening beginning at 7:00 P.M. with visitation following until 9:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. www.thomaspoteet.com.
