Harvey Smith Holmes, Sr.

JOHNSTON – Funeral Services for
Mr. Harvey
Smith Holmes, Sr., 88, of Saluda County, will be held at 11:00 am
Monday, October 10, 2011 at Saluda Baptist Church, Saluda, SC.
Interment will follow in Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery, Johnston,
SC. The family will receive friends at Bland Funeral Home from 5 pm to
7 pm on Sunday, October 9, 2011.
Mr. Holmes, a native of Edgefield County, passed away Friday, October
07, 2011 at his home. He was born July 3, 1923 and was a son of the
late Edward Moody and Dollie Montez Smith Holmes. He was preceded in
death by his “darling” wife, Ruby Matheny Holmes.
Mr. Holmes was former founder, owner and president of Johnston Chip
Mill, Johnston; Forest Crown Planer Lumber Mill, Aiken; Holmes Dodge,
Johnston; Holmes Lumber Co., Johnston and Holmes Timber Co., Johnston.
At his death he was owner and president of Persimmon Hill Golf Club,
Saluda County, Johnston, SC.
Having started and developed many companies throughout the region, Mr.
Holmes was a true South Carolina entrepreneur. He was a conscientious
land owner who honored the best practices in land and timber
development. He was the recipient of the 2008 Saluda County Forestry
Association Forest Landowner of the Year Award and a sustaining member
of the SC Law Enforcement Association. He was also a former member of
the Ridge Fishing Club, Johnston and the Investment Club, Saluda.
Mr. Holmes was known throughout South Carolina and beyond for his
generous heart and natural ability to help people. He was a highly
respected Southern Gentleman who loved his God, his family and his
friends. He was a devoted husband, a dedicated father and “Pop” to his
children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
He was a member of Saluda Baptist Church and the Men’s IV Sunday School
Class.
Survivors include Daughters: Elizabeth H. Sauls, Lexington; Patricia H.
Wannamaker (DT), Saluda; sons: H. Smith Holmes, Jr. (Lila), Johnston;
Jerry M Holmes, Saluda; daughter-in law Mary Berry H. Johnston (Harry),
Mt. Pleasant; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by a son: Charles E. Holmes; five brothers: Hamp,
Vernon, Obie, EM and Alvin Holmes and two sisters: Lizzie H. Kirkland
and Annie Ruth H. Satcher.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to Hospice Care of South
Carolina for their skilled care and kindness and to Dr. Hugh Morgan for
his care and support. Also, the family expresses special thanks to
their friend and caregiver Lanie Lorick for her faithfulness and loving
kindness, and to Miriam Bledsoe Berry, a special caregiver and friend.
