Rev. Charles Willis Koons

JOHNSTON – A Memorial Service for Rev. Charles Willis Koons, age 76, will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Augusta, Ga at 11 o’clock. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary immediately following the service. Interment will take place at a later date at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery.

Rev. Koons, a native of Springfield, OH, died Sunday, July 17, 2011. Born on October 14, 1934, he was a son of Wade H. and Katharine H. Koons. Most of his early years he lived in Carey, OH. He graduated from Parkersburg West Virginia High School in 1952. In 1956, he graduated from Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH. He then attended Northwestern Lutheran Seminary in Minneapolis, MN and graduated with a MDiv. Degree in June, 1959. He was ordained into the ministry of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) in 1959 after which he served parishes in Toledo, OH and Anniston, AL. In 1967, he responded to a call from the LCA Mission Board to serve as pastor of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and Administrator of St. Peter’s School in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa where he served for seven years. After returning to the United States in 1971, he served a parish in Florence, AL where he met and married Nelle Bowling Locker.

In 1990, they moved to Johnston, SC where he pastored St. John Lutheran Church until his retirement in 2000. At this time, he and Nelle became members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aiken, SC. He then served as visitation pastor at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Augusta, GA. He continued there until his death.

He is survived by his wife: Nelle; daughter Janet (Charles) Quillen of Madison, AL; son: Al (Elise) Locker of Westford, MA.; four grandchildren: Rachel Quillen, PatrickQuillen, Alex Locker and Kirsten Locker; sister: Nancy (Rev. Bruce) Pederson and her family of Minneapolis, MN.
