Dr. Chester Phillips

MERRIWETHER – Dr. Chester Phillips, 89, of Timothy Crossing Court in N. Augusta, SC, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, April 23, 2011, after serving as a minister of the gospel for over 40 years. Before moving to South Carolina, Dr. Phillips served long-term pastorates in North Carolina and Tennessee. He retired from pastoring churches in 1991. Dr. Phillips, a native of North Carolina, received his early education in Durham. He graduated from Bob Jones University in 1954. For 68 years, he was married to Dorothy Phillips, a former high school teacher. He was the father of three children - Cindy (deceased), Dean Phillips of Topsail Island, NC, and Kent Phillips of N. Augusta, SC.; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. During World War II, he served two and a half years overseas in the European Theater as a medic in the Army Air Force. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at Sweetwater Baptist Church, 198 Sweetwater Road, N. Augusta, S.C. His funeral service will follow at 2:00 with Dr. Paul Noe officiating. He will be buried in the Sweetwater Baptist Cemetery. Dr. Phillips' six grandsons, Nick, Tyler, Zack, Logan, Chet, and Vince Phillips, will serve as pallbearers.
