Col. Thomas Calhoun Wright

WARD –  Tom C. Wright, USAR (Ret.), 86, husband of Julia Anne (Judy) Wright, died Sunday, November 25, 2007. He is also survived by a daughter, Judith (Stuart) Smith; a granddaughter, Andrea (Nick) Wates; two great-grandchildren, Seth and Avery Wates; a brother, Jacob Wright (Eleanor); and sister, Lois Kaiser (Wilson). He was predeceased by a son, Thomas C. Wright, Jr.; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Graham.

Mr. Wright, a native of Ward, SC, was a son of the late St. Pierre and Gertrude Caughman Wright. He was a 1942 graduate of Clemson University having played on the 1939 Cotton Bowl team. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the China, Burma, India Theatre Operation. He was an agriculture teacher at Irmo High School and the first principal of Ridge Spring-Monetta High School. Mr. Wright had retired from the U.S. Postal Service as rural Mail Carrier. He established Wright’s Christmas Tree Farm and was a founding father of the South Carolina Christmas Tree Association and also served as a state director of the National Christmas Tree Association. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Johnston; Hampton Masonic Lodge, Hejaz Shriners, American Legion Post 133 and the Reserve Officers Association of the US.

Graveside services will be held at Oconee Memorial Park in Seneca, SC, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 27. Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital, 950 West Paris Road, Greenville, SC 29605-4277 or American Heart Association of SC, 3535 Pelham Road, Ste. 111, Greenville, SC 29615.
