Watching the expression on Rocky McKie’s face as he stood beside one his restored tractors it was easy to see this was much more to him than just a hobby.

Turkey season began Saturday April 1st.  My son, Jeff, and I had agreed to hunt opening weekend at a hunt club an hour away, and spend the weekdays in the Forks area of Sumter National Forest which is closer to home.  Earlier in the season, I had observed several toms while I reported on the construction of the new FATS mountain biking trail.

Opening day of turkey season this year was like no other I’ve seen in some time. The morning began as I crawled from my hotel bed listening to the rain as it poured outside my room.

Buster the turkey slayer
Opening week of turkey season last season was a disaster to say the least, With that kind of luck you get frustrated pretty quickly. I was bound and determined to get a turkey before the season was out; so much so, that I decided to enlist the help of a local legend, Buster the turkey slayer.

Forks Area Trail System, better known as FATS Grand Opening Set
Forks Area Trail System, better known as FATS was the focus of my attention on Wednesday afternoon.  Bill Victor who designed and is overseer of the building of the FATS trail offered me an advance ride of the newly constructed trail off of Woodlawn Road in Edgefield County.
