Monthly Featured Dining:
Old McDonald Fish Camp

Dining Review Team

Our featured dining establishment this week is Old McDonald Fish Camp located at 355 Currytown Rd in Merriwether. It is open Thursday and Friday at 5:00 pm and Saturday at 4:00 pm. Phone 803-279-3305 or Fax 803-279-2117

Nestled on a large pond surrounded by ducks, chickens, and assorted other animals you enjoy the wait to be seated and children enjoy feeding the animals and fish. Old McDonald is a smoke free restaurant and serves no alcohol, just family oriented atmosphere and pleasurable employees.

We arrived at 4:45pm and found a crowd already inside. We enjoyed seeing familiar faces both from around the county and others from Evans and Augusta. We were seated after a relatively short waiting period. After being served our drinks it was off to the grits and hushpuppies bar. One could just about make a meal out of these two favorites alone.

The menu has a large selection to choose from including shrimp, oysters, gator, perch, flounder, and of course, catfish and includes a senior and children’s menu .

We choose to start our meal off with an appetizer of Fried Jalapeño Peppers stuffed with crabmeat for $5.50. They arrived quickly and hot and there were more than we could eat. They were tasty and spicy!

For the entrée one ordered the Seafood Platter with flounder, shrimp, crab, scallops, fried oysters with french-fries, cole slaw and tarter sauce for $15.95 ($2.00 extra for Broiled). The other ordered the Large Portion of fried shrimp with a baked potato, cole slaw and tarter sauce for $12.50.

Again the food was served quickly and hot and the servings were immense. The Seafood Platter was piled high with great smelling food. The fried oysters were delicious and contained a unique flavor in the batter. The flounder was tender and flakey and the scallops moist and full of flavor. We were off to a great start. The stuffed crab was good but just missing a certain something. All in all a great platter indeed and more than enough to fill even the hungriest of patrons.

The Fried Shrimp were fresh tasting, golden brown and the light breading added to, rather than overpowered, the wonderful taste of fresh shrimp. The Large Portions means just what it says. The baked potato was done and hot not hard, under or overcooked, a pet peeve of one of our team. The sweet tea was just like mom used to make, not too sweet, just right.

Our server was prompt and tended to our every need and that of other tables surrounding us as well. Patrons were treated with a smile and fast friendly service. We enjoyed our server acting as the cashier and returned with our receipt quickly when we were done.

In all it was a wonderful dining experience. The hometown feel of the restaurant, the county ambiance, and the friendly faces made it all the more enjoyable. An absolute must for family dining. We highly recommend Old McDonald Fish Camp.

Cost: Our dinners as stated, with sweet teas and appetizer was $36.95 and with tax adding $2.22 for a total before gratuity of $39.17

Advice: Arrive early, the popularity assures a crowd and longer waiting times than we enjoyed later into the evening. Arrive hungry, very hungry, as servings are plentiful!

Advantages: The setting is peaceful and relaxing. The many animals wandering about keep children entertained while waiting. A definite plus.

Established: 1977, 28 years in operation
Onwer: Jerry Bass

Time: We were in and out in less than one hour. Expect longer wait times later in the evenings.

Old McDonald Fish Camp also is available to host large gatherings, for more information visit their website.
