Outdoors
When I was growing up I always wanted to live in Edgefield County web posted February 22, 2006 By: Freddy Petersen EdgefieldDaily.com contributing columnist Many of us think the ultimate place to spend outdoors as anywhere but where we live. How many times a week have you day dreamed watching the outdoor channels what would it be like to be there with those guys right now. I've been there too! We all do it; many of us though are missing the great times that can be had right here. Last Christmas I was visiting my wife’s family in Michigan while there I paid my friends over at Gander Mountain my annual visit. After they have their fun picking on my southern accent they invariably ask the same question, Where you from? This is always a little hard to answer due to the fact I don’t live in a city and people look at you funny if you tell them you live inside a National Forest area so I just tell them “Edgefield county South Carolina”. It never fails, they light up like a Christmas tree and say “Hey isn't that where the big boys are, you know the Wild Turkey Federation, and Quail Unlimited, “Yep, just down the road from my house” From that moment on for some weird reason I'm a celebrity in their eyes. Now, help me out here if we live in the “big boys” of the hunting industries county who are we to dream of being elsewhere? I know they are in a league of their own. But, aside from the fact that we are host to the nations largest wildlife conservation programs, Edgefield County and the surrounding area has more to offer your basic run of the mill outdoorsmen than most counties in the state possibly the southeast, why then do many of us dream of hunting and fishing everywhere else but here. When I was growing up I always wanted to live in Edgefield County, “As close to the National Forest as I can get that's what I want.” Well, if I lived any closer I would be on Federal property. It’s where I want to be, right here in the thick of it all, minutes from the lake, fishing, hunting, camping, paddling and some of the best mountain biking anywhere! Well if you haven’t already figured it out that’s what this new column will be all about; enjoying everything outdoors that Edgefield County and the surrounding area has to offer. I know you will be surprised by all that’s going on right here under you nose. I’m looking forward to hearing from you as well. Feel free to send me your outdoor pictures from hunting, fishing to anything outdoors pictures. Who knows we may feature here in EdgefieldDaily.com. I also want to hear about anyone local to spotlight here. Maybe you know someone who has a special craft of knife making, turkey calls anything of that nature I would love to talk to them and see what there up to.
