The Apple Story
By Pastor Phillip Howle
web
posted February 17, 2010
RELIGION – “Be alert, stand firm in the
faith, be brave and strong. (14) Your every action must be
done with love. 1 Cor 16:13-14”
“Be alert”, as I read that verse, one embarrassing moment comes to
mind. I guess I can share it here. I was in tenth grade standing out in
the courtyard of my high school with a friend and noticed that some
guys were throwing fruit at people. All kinds, whatever came in their
bag lunch. At first it was kind of funny seeing people get hit, but all
of a sudden I saw fruit incoming and I just froze. That piece of fruit
(an apple), hit me right in my crotch: go ahead laugh it up!
Now, I will save details from here forward. But I had to go to the
office and explain to, first the secretary why I needed to call
my mom, then explain to my mom why she had to get off work and come
pick me up. Directly after I endured all that embarrassment my mom and
the secretary laughed at me uncontrollably. THANKS!
In 1 Corinthians 16 Paul is closing his letter to the church at
Corinth. He has rebuked them and corrected them. If you ever think your
church is bad, read 1 Corinthians, they had some real issues! Paul
closes out this letter with five imperatives.
• Be Alert: go proactively into each day determined
to live for God, look for people to bless and love, don’t sit back and
take whatever comes your way.
• Stand Firm: apples to the crotch will come and try
to knock you down, but by preparing yourself with the grace and love of
God, you can endure the blows of life.
• Be Brave: No place for fear of anything or any one
expect for God in the Christian life. Take chances and stretch yourself
outside of the comfortable Christian rut so many of us live our lives
in.
• Be Strong: Strength comes from training. Unless you
are seeking to grow daily closer to God through Bible study and prayer,
you will not have the strength to make it through the stresses of life.
• Love: In all things, love. That great 1 Cor 13
passage about love that Paul had just written about. That wonderful,
patient, kind, never ending love, which is not rude and irritable.
That’s the kind of love Paul is talking about.
Hopefully no apples nail you in the crotch today, but I can bet there
will be stress that tries to entangle you. So try to remember and work
on these five areas today in all you do. Maybe print them and keep them
on your desk so you can be reminded of them.
Wondering if I should have told this story, Pastor Phillip
