What's in a Name Part 6

By Pastor Phillip Howle
web posted February 18, 2015

RELIGION – I was really tempted to lie a few weeks back. I was doing my taxes with a software program and was asked a question which I had never been asked before by tax program “Have you purchased anything from Amazon.com in the past year?” My first thought was, “What have I NOT purchased from Amazon this past year?” I use their “Prime” free two-day shipping option. So I buy all kinds of things for myself and others and get them shipped to my house. The UPS man is one of my closest friends in the world.

I answered yes to the question and it asked me how much I had spent. I went to my account to pull that info up and it was a plenty! The program told me that I was supposed to voluntarily pay back sales tax on all those purchases. After a little looking around on the net, I found that Amazon does not submit the info to the State, so I called a preacher buddy of mine to try to find someone to tell me that I could lie and not pay this back sales tax. He reminded me that Jesus said “give to Caesar what is Caesar’s.” He also told me to go ahead and lie, provided I did not mind going to hell over a hundred bucks! So I told the truth and I will cut my check later to the great state of SC.

I tell you this because this week our name of God is Yahweh-El Emeth or The LORD God of Truth. We know that God always speaks the truth. He never lies. This is what the Bible, the truth that God has spoken, says: God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? (Numbers 23:19)

A devotional book for boys asks three very important questions: Cows have two ears. Truth? Or lie? Rocks are hard. Truth? Or lie? Horses have eight legs. Truth? Or lie? This is easy right? It adds “How do you know that the last statement is a lie? You know because you have seen horses. You know they have four legs. Since you know the truth about horses, you know the lie is a lie. To catch lies, you must know the truth.”

Go all the way back to creation; remember what God told Adam in the Garden of Eden about the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil? “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:16–17)

But what did Satan, who came as a serpent, say to Eve? These are his very words: You will not surely die. (Genesis 3:4) Both of these statements can’t be true. God said one thing—“You will surely die”—and Satan said another, “You will not surely die.” Which was true?

Sadly, Eve saw Yahweh-El Emeth as a liar. Adam likewise freely joined in the proclamation that Yahweh-El Emeth was a liar and that He could not be trusted. They chose to trust Satan instead. Are Adam and Eve still alive today? Do people die? Death came into the world, just as God said it would.

So who is the truth-teller, God or Satan? Who is the liar? “Every word of God proves true.” (Proverbs 30:5) Every single word God speaks is the truth. But this is what the Bible says about Satan: He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44)

The boys’ devotional book adds that “There is one truth, God’s truth found in the Bible. But there are many lies. All those lies are against Yahweh-El Emeth, the LORD God of Truth. Lies are everywhere. Some are found in books, in movies, on bumper stickers and posters, on the radio . . . from friends and other people . . . everywhere. Lies hurt. God hates lies. How do you know when you hear a lie? You must know the truth. Truth is found in Yahweh-El Emeth, the LORD God of Truth. The Bible is His Word, and every word of His is true.” (God’s Names, Sally Michael)

God not only told us about truth, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to show us truth. His name is Truth. Jesus said of Himself, “I am… the truth” (John 14:6); He told us knowing the truth sets us free (8:32). So when we know Jesus Christ, He reveals the truth of who God is, who we are, how God sees our sin, and what God’s answer is to restore our broken relationship with Him.

Buying a little less from Amazon this year!
