I Have a Huge Head By Pastor Phillip Howle web posted February 24, 2010 RELIGION – I have a large head, not egotistically, but spatially. I have a watermelon sitting on shoulders. It shows up on Google Earth images. You want proof of how large my head is. It was almost impossible to fit into a football helmet. Each year I tried on a dozen helmets, adjusted the padding to try and get a fit on this beach ball of mine. Usually for the first few weeks of football my forehead would rub raw from the tight fitting helmet. But, it had to be endured. Why, because playing football without a helmet is not an option. Getting hit in the head is just not good for anyone! Now, I try hard every day to protect my head. Not just from getting hit, but from garbage entering into it. It is struggle. Our world is full of enticing, sinful sights and sounds almost everywhere you look. It is not easy, but I have learned that you either control the sin you allow in your head, or that sin will wind up controlling you. Solomon repeats this truth as he says that our thought lives ultimately determine our character. Solomon said, “For as he thinks within himself, so he is” (Pro. 23:7). Tryon Edwards elaborates as he shows this progression work itself out in your life: “Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny.” Your eternal future is dependent on what you allow into your mind. Jerry Bridges, in his amazing book “The Pursuit of Holiness” says that “Holiness begins in our minds and works out to our actions.” Since we have seen that this is true above then what we allow to enter our minds is critically important. I am not being a prude, but we need to honestly evaluate the television and movies we watch, the books and magazines we read, the music we listen to, and the friends who we allow to influence our life. They all have an affect our minds. Take Philippians 4:8 and judge all you do it by it. Are the thoughts that are stimulated in your mind by these various forms of influence producing in you pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy thoughts? My guess is for all of us we would do well to be far more careful with the garbage we willingly allow in our minds. So, today are you controlling your thoughts and your mind? You ought to! You will be amazed at what a difference it makes to refuse to allow bad thoughts to take up home in your head. The statement “garbage in, garbage out” is very true. So today do as Paul says in 2 Cor 10:5 “Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” The Next Time You See Me You Will Stare At My Large Head, Pastor Phillip © Copyright 2010
