White Noise of Life
By Pastor Philip Howle
web
posted March 17, 2010
RELIGION – I have a loud voice. It is
really loud. I make kids cry, but all the seniors at the nursing home
can hear me. It sounds like I have gravel in my throat or like I am a
professional wrestling ring announcer. However, even with this
obnoxious booming voice, there is one time my voice can’t be heard.
That is in my son Luke’s room.
We use a white noise machine in our six month olds’ room. It is
awful; you can’t think or hear anything. It sounds like a jet
turbine engine. My wife Rebecca and I try to talk to each other, but
communication is plain impossible. Nevertheless, for reasons beyond my
comprehension, both our boys have calmed down at the sound of this
earsplitting racket. It makes me want to scream. I hear it ringing in
my head right now! You see with all the noise, Rebecca can speak and
speak very clearly and carefully, but all that dreadful outside racket
drowns out her very sweet voice. The amazing thing is in return, she
can’t hear me.
This got me thinking. You know often times when we go through dry times
in our spiritual life. We often assume that God is not speaking and God
is not seeking to communicate with us. The Psalmist felt this way as he
wrote in Psalm 83:1 “God, do not keep silent. Do not be deaf, God; do
not be idle.” I want you to stop and think. Is this really
the case? Does the cat got God’s tongue? I don’t think so. It is far
more likely that we have allowed the white noise of life to drown out
God’s voice. What is the white noise of life? There are many sources:
stress, the busyness of our schedule, un-dealt with sin in our life,
and broken relationships.
But here is some good news! God’s voice can be heard above any of the
sources of white noise in our life. Hear the words of Psalm 29 as
David mentions the power and the strength of the voice of the Lord.
Psa 29:1-11 A psalm of David. Give honor to the LORD, you heavenly
beings; give honor to the LORD for his glory and strength.
(2) Give honor to the LORD for the glory of his name. Worship the
LORD in the splendor of his holiness. (3) The voice of the
LORD echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The LORD thunders
over the mighty sea. (4) The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. (5) The voice of
the LORD splits the mighty cedars; the LORD shatters the cedars of
Lebanon. (6) He makes Lebanon's mountains skip like a calf
and Mount Hermon [28] to leap like a young bull. (7) The
voice of the LORD strikes with lightning bolts. (8) The
voice of the LORD makes the desert quake; the LORD shakes the desert of
Kadesh. (9) The voice of the LORD twists mighty oaks [29]
and strips the forests bare. In his Temple everyone shouts,
"Glory!" (10) The LORD rules over the floodwaters. The LORD
reigns as king forever. (11) The LORD gives his people
strength. The LORD blesses them with peace.
So today, quite down. Take a few minutes, cut the TV and cell
phone off, open a Bible, bow your head in prayer, do a little reading,
be honest with yourself and hear God speak. What do you think God
desires to say to you today? How long have you allowed the white noise
of life to keep you from hearing the powerful voice of your Savior?
Missing the voice of my wife Rebecca, the joy of my son Cason, and the
laugh of little Luke, and the people of Antioch Baptist Church as I am
somewhere in Haiti. Be home soon. God bless you all Pastor Phillip.
