God's Love for You

By Pastor Phillip Howle
web posted June 5, 2014

RELIGION – How do you think God feels about you today?  This is a huge a question. It affects how you approach Him and know Him. I must confess there are days when I can’t stand myself. I know there are days when it seems my wife and kids ain’t so wild about me either. So it only follows that God must barely be able to stand me as well. I have spent a bunch of my life feeling like God is not really happy with me.

Well assuming that God is pretty much bothered with me all the time in my past has at times driven me to try and be really, really good to get God happier with me. This would lead to pride and then discouragement when I failed. At other times, it frankly has made me want to just say “why bother, I never seem to please God.”

So how does God feel about you today? I am going to be addressing this response to Christians over the next few weeks. If you have never turned from your sin to follow Christ, then Romans 5:1 says that you are at war with God “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” God desires for all his creations to lay down their rebellion to Him and be forgiven, but this is not true for every reader. You must decide if you have ceased your rebellion and placed your faith in Christ alone for your salvation.

So for the Christian reading this let me give you some great news about how God feels about you today! It comes from a little Minor Prophet. In Zephaniah 3:17 we read that “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” God is singing for joy for you right now as His child!

I have in my past and still today often times feel as if I have to make myself loveable and worthy for God to love me. But this reverses what the Bible sets in order: “In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10). Our love for God is a reflex or response to His love for us. He loved us first! We must be careful not to invert the sequence.

Dr. Jack Deere says that “Many in the church today, are convinced God is angry with His people. They have no idea how crazy He is about them!” For me I feel a little odd saying that God is crazy about me. It seems much more likely that I might drive God crazy.  But God is crazy about you, His child, right this very moment!

Psalms 149:4 reads that “the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation.”This means that His mind is filled with thoughts of you as He considers fresh and exciting ways He can shower you with His good graces. As you drift off to sleep, He is thinking of you. When you awaken, He’s still there, thinking of you.

Some questions for you to think about:
How does knowing that God is crazy about you make you feel?  If it makes you feel odd, why so?
If you truly got God’s love for you what a difference would it make in your life?
How should God’s real, powerful, and present love for you affect the way that you live?
Since our love for God is in response to His love for us, how does our sin keep us from experiencing God’s love in our life?
