Father’s Teach Your Children Well
By Pastor Phillip Howle
web
posted June 16, 2010
RELIGION – A bunch of old hippies used to
sing (no offense meant to hippies old or young at all) “Teach your
children well. Teach your children what you believe in. Make a world
that we can live in.” Well, I agree with them on this point. Having two
boys, I try my best to teach them all kinds of cool things. Though
Luke, at nine months of age, can only make spit bubbles, I have taught
my three year old Cason to apply a Brazilian Jiu-jitsus arm bar as well
as how to eat Krystals. I love it!
I also nightly lead our family in prayer, singing (be glad you don’t
have to hear the signing Howle Family, we are rough), Bible reading and
Scripture memorization. This is our family worship. We are not perfect,
some nights, due to late night schedules, we may skip it, but it has
genuinely helped our family.
Rebecca and I may be having a little argument, but after worshipping as
a family, all is well. Though sometimes our prayers are interrupted by
the dog, and Cason wants to wrestle before reading the Bible, I can’t
express how awesome this daily time is. I encourage all men reading
this to lead your family in worship time daily. I take serious my
responsibility to teach my family about God. I also understand that my
title of Father is more important than my title as Pastor or Reverend.
Why is this? It is because my kids will grow up relating to God as a
Father. I mean we don’t pray in the Lord’s Prayer “Our Pastor who art
in heaven.” We pray to our heavenly Father.
Now, some of you are thinking, that is well and good Rev. Howle, but I
am not a pastor. You may not be, but this does not lessen your
responsibility as a dad. Moses writes in Deuteronomy 6:5-8 “Love the
LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all
your strength. (6) These words that I am giving you today
are to be in your heart. (7) Repeat them to your children.
Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the
road, when you lie down and when you get up. (8) Bind them as a
sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead.” Men,
Moses knew that your kids will follow your lead and ultimately depended
on you for spiritual instruction, do you?
For any men who think that church and God fall under the mom’s job
description, that is OK. But just be forewarned because John
MacArthur in his sermon, Crucial Lessons for a Wise Father, says “If
you fail, father, to teach your son to fear God, the devil will teach
him to hate God. If you fail to teach your son to guard his mind, the
devil will gladly teach him to have an open mind. If you fail to teach
your son to obey his parents, the devil will teach him to rebel and
break his parent’s heart. If you fail to teach your son to select his
companions, the devil will gladly choose them for him. If you fail to
teach your son to control his body, the devil will teach him to give it
over completely to lust. If you fail to teach your son to enjoy the
marriage partner that God has given him, the devil will teach him to
destroy the marriage. If you fail to teach your son to watch his words,
the devil will fill his mouth with filth. If you fail to teach your son
to pursue his work, the devil will make his laziness a tool of hell. If
you fail to teach your son to manage his money, the devil will teach
him to waste it on riotous living. And if you fail to teach your son to
love his neighbor, the devil will gladly teach him to love only
himself.”
If you need some help getting started head over to http://familyworshipguide.net/.
It is a great website that Greg Pittman the Associate Pastor of Worship
at First Baptist of Edgefield created and maintains daily. So head over
to Greg’s website and surprise your family on father’s day by giving
them the gift of family worship.
Will be the man your family needs and say with bold faith in Christ
“But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.(Josh 24:15)”
