Summer Lake to have road placed into county road system

web posted May 14, 2008
EDGEFIELD – After ten years of trying, Summer Lake Subdivision will have their road accepted into the county road system as soon as the deed is turned over to the county. “Everything was done ten years ago,” Zoning Administrator Guy Mueller told the planning commission stating that for some unexplained reason it was never followed up on. “Who dropped the ball,” Commissioner Tracy Freeman asked. “The county,” Mueller answered.

Mr. Mueller said the county began patching the road starting in 2004 but has not moved forward with repairs due to the fact the county does not hold the deed. “My question to you (the planning commission) is, is this a county road?”  Mr. Mueller explained that the road was in acceptable condition when the road was originally to be accepted but now is in dire need of repaving. Mr. Mueller said he was seeking the approval so he could add the roads to bids about to be advertised for paving and get the work done.

After a lengthy discussion the commission voted to approve the road being accepted with the condition that the title is handed over to the county.

The commission also approved the field review for the Cooper Place Subdivision with the stipulation that a list of nine items be provided to the commission that dealt with soil studies, water runoff and approval from DHEC.

In an unusual request, Atlantic Coast Properties requested approval of a road off Sweetwater Road near Mount Vintage. “It’s unusual for a developer to come to the county for a road approval and no subdivision,” Mr. Mueller said. “It’s unclear what they want to do with it.” It was also unclear if the road would be a private road or turned over to the county.

Mr. Mueller said the company owned “a very large tract of land back there” and may be buying more, perhaps for future development. The commission questioned whether the road would be wide enough for a development and Mr. Mueller said the company purchased a 100-foot strip of land that connected to Sweetwater Road, “They have plenty of room for an entrance,” Mueller said.

However, there were several issues surrounding the road and he suggested that the road plan not be approved at this time until the items could be addressed and questions answered. The commission agreed and took the road plan in as information only.

With no other business the meeting was adjourned.
