Merriwether is not represented over half the time in county planning

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted September 15, 2005

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Planning Commission member Jim Oliver, who is to represent the Merriwether Community on the commission, has a hard time attending the meetings. Although only one commission member, Norman Stephenson, has not missed a meeting and all others have missed one or two, Mr. Oliver misses more meetings than he attends. So far this year Mr. Oliver has missed five of the first nine meetings and missed many in a row.

Mr. Oliver’s absenteeism prompted Zoning Administrator Guy Mueller to send him an e-mail with the subject line: “have you died on the vine” and a simple message followed, “This is your invitation to the meeting tomorrow night.” Oliver’s rather terse response took a swipe at Edgefield Daily.com as well we found while looking through public records.

The problem is Jim Oliver is on the unelected Fox Creek School Board which meets the same night as the planning commission. This conflict makes Mr. Oliver attend what he evidently feels is most important; Fox Creek High School, not his appointed district of Merriwether. Merriwether deserves representation and they are not getting it from a commissioner who just cannot find time to show up for meetings.

In the past members who missed fewer meetings have stepped down from the commission as Joe Edwards did. Attendance is a requirement of the appointed position. The Edgefield County Council, due to the near 60% absenteeism rate, could vote to have him removed.
