web posted January 2, 2008
PSA – Do you have a favorite Edgefield County restaurant? Or a local shop that you can’t live without? Well, now is your chance to speak up and let your preferences count. In the coming weeks, the Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce, working in conjunction with local media outlets, will sponsor a “Best of Edgefield County” contest, in which area residents will be allowed to vote on their favorite county businesses.

Modeled after the annual “Best of Augusta” promotion sponsored by The Augusta Chronicle and the similar “Best of Aiken” promotion sponsored by the Aiken County Magazine, the local version will be dubbed the “Peachiest of Edgefield County.”
Addressing why the chamber chose to sponsor the contest, chamber member Melanie Gibson explained, “We looked at our county and saw the wonderful growth that has been happening here, and we wanted a way to showcase the businesses here and to encourage people to shop locally.”

Gibson, a co-owner of Edgefield Office Supply, added, “We thought this would be a fun way to promote healthy competition among the county’s places of business.”
The ballot features about forty different categories, running the range from dining to shopping to leisure, with some of the specific categories including “Best Place to Shop for Your Husband/Boyfriend” and “Best Chinese Food.”

Ballots must be cut out from The Edgefield Advertiser, The Citizen News, or downloaded from EdgefieldDaily.com, completed, and mailed in or delivered to the Chamber of Commerce, 416 Calhoun Street, Johnston, SC, 29824, no later than Tuesday, January 15, 2008. No photocopies will be accepted.

Winners of each category will be announced during the chamber’s annual banquet on Friday, January 25, and can proudly display their “Peachiest” designation inside their restaurant or place of business throughout the year.

For some, the competition will offer an opportunity to learn more about county businesses they might not frequent. Say that someone reads about a restaurant that gets voted as having the “Best Hamburger.” If that person has never been there, this might encourage them to try that hamburger out. In that manner, the chamber hopes that the promotion will stir up interest in local establishments and will spur people patronize places that haven’t in the past.

Gibson said that the published winners will make “a great community guide” for newcomers and residents alike. With plans to make it an annual competition, it will also be an excellent year-in-review gauge of locals’ likes and dislikes. “Every business is a winner,” she explained, “but this will be a chance to let people voice their opinions and hear what the county has to say. It’s time to show our businesses the recognition that they have grown to receive.”  For more information, contact the Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce at (803) 275-0010.

EdgefieldDaily.com will feature the winners and their location as a Section on our navigational lmenu for all of 2008
